Sabine Lisicki (Germany) Biography

Sabine Lisicki

Despite two years of injury Sabine Lisicki still manages to laugh. Because she spent the Spring of 2010 on crutches she saw her ranking plummet out of the top 100 and she ended the year at 186.

Birthplace:Troisdorf, West Germany
Height:5 ft 10 in
Turned Pro:2006

But she has bounced back going from qualifying at the 2011 ASB Classic in Auckland to reach the second round before she was beaten by Yanina Wickmayer in three sets. In just six weeks she had risen two places to 184.

Her ankle problems began at the US Open in 2009 when she was playing Anastasia Rodionova in the third set of a tough match. It was match point when Lisicki slipped and was sobbing in pain from a chronic injury to her left ankle.

Rodionova was given the set 7-5 and the match and signed autographs as Lisicki was treated on the court. In the end, with her left ankle heavily strapped, she was taken off the court in a wheel chair.

In 2010 she was limited to only 10 tournaments after an ankle injury incurred at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells which resulted in her spending most of the Spring on crutches.

She was so depressed after the injury she could not even bear to watch tennis on television and reached for the remote as soon as it came on.

She told reporters that she virtually had to learn to walk and run again as she had no muscles in her calf and had to rebuild them. Before the injury, she could run for an hour but when she began to run again she could only manage 50 seconds and wondered how she would ever get back.

But as the Women’s Tennis Association says about her, “She is feisty, works hard and a lot of fun because she laughs a lot.”

A tall girl at 5ft 10ins she was introduced to tennis by her father Dr. Richard Lisicki after she begged him to teach her when she watched him coaching other pupils. He became her coach and she had never had a professional coach in her life until she went to live and study at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

She has a Yorkshire Terrier Happy and was the former girlfriend of Andy Roddick who married swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker in April 2009.

She previously played with a Wilson BLX Blade 98 pink racket and used to wear Adidas women’s Fall Barricade clothes and Barricade 6.0 shoes.

She hopes to remain injury-free so she can climb up the rankings. At the end of the 2012 women’s season, she was ranked 37th in the world after a year high rank of 12th
